BYE Recommends Books!

Posted under Book Recommendations by Devin Cole on Friday 24 April 2009 at 9:43 am

Rob Pyles in his natural habitatBoston Young Entrepreneurs’ great strength lies in its function as a conduit of expertise, advice and information among entrepreneurs. We’re doing our best to bring that to you on the web as well, so check out our first two book recommendations ever!

From esteemed BYE Board Member and Founder of Audissey Guides, Rob Pyles:

Four Hour Workweek:
Any business book that’s hilarious automatically gets points with me. This is a pretty revolutionary book that helps you to: a) focus your energy on what’s important in your business and your life b) eliminate the stupid meaningless tasks that fill up your day, and c) live a life worth living. Even if you’re not a business person or entrepreneur, this is still a fascinating read by a very smart person.

E-Myth:
This book tells you how to avoid the deadly trap that so many entrepreneurs fall victim to: doing everything in your business! It helps you step back and work more “on” your business and less “in” your business. Remove yourself from the equation, find talented people to hire, and create a smoothly oiled machine. Your job is to run the business and grow the business - this book helps you learn how.

Elise Moussa of BeRewarding on Presenting

Posted under Business News by Devin Cole on Wednesday 22 April 2009 at 10:36 am

Elise Moussa presented the business plan for BeRewarding to Boston Young Entrepreneurs in March.

She did a great job and got lots of exceptional feedback from the group. If you’ve ever thought about presenting your business plan, make sure to read on to learn more about the experience.

Here’s what she had to say:

BYE members offered an invaluable circle of hands-on consulting and strategic advice last month when I presented my new social enterprise, BeRewarding, which is launching today, Wednesday, April 22 in honor of the 39th Anniversary of Earth Day. I am impressed with BYEs wide-ranging expertise, talent and passion and especially their admiration of a social enterprise.

Their skills ranged from finance to marketing to consulting to education and several marketing and PR gurus generously offered follow-up consulting sessions.

I strongly encourage every Boston Young Entrepreneur to get involved in the BYE circle if they want to start-up, launch, improve or expand their organization. My marketing and PR tactics have doubled in value and reinforces what Bouilly once said, “Whatever we possess becomes of double value when we have the opportunity of sharing it with others.”

I am honored to be part of such a talented and socially aware network and I am thrilled to see their joy and interest to get involved in BeRewarding when they learned how BeRewarding raises awareness and funds to solve planetary and social issues by leveraging an online game to move from social concern to social action - with just a click!

Launch into Boston Presentation Report

Posted under Business News, News by Devin Cole on Wednesday 8 April 2009 at 12:27 pm

Launch into Boston’s founders Stefanie Smith and Meg Helms presented their business plan at February’s meeting.

In the first of an ongoing Boston Young Entrepreneurs tradition, Stef and Meg have written up their presentation experience. Please take a look and provide comments, suggestions and ideas to your fellow entrepreneurs.

Presenting our company, Launch into Boston, to members of Boston Young Entrepreneurs has been an extremely beneficial experience for us. To speak in front of a group of people about an idea that we have fostered for over a year was intimidating at first, but what we gained from it far outweighed our initial apprehension.

Launch is a transition service that connects people to Boston. We work with colleges, companies and individuals to provide information and resources to our clients so that they can make a successful transition into the city, whether that transition is from college or from another part of the country.  We work with our clients one-on-one, and we host seminars about living and working in Boston.

BYE is back this month with an exciting presentation from Jill Yanofsky, founder of High Rock Associates.

We’ve all had an up close and personal seat to the changing financial and business climate in the US and Boston. Many of us have had to or will have to change the way that we do business in a fundamental way.

Since High Rock is in the business of finding job candidates, which is tough in a slow economy,  Jill is looking at how she can shift to keep her business stable and sustainable.

Details:

Date: Tuesday, April 30th

Time: 6:00pm

Location: Boston Public Library - Copley Branch, Room C04, 700 Boylston Street, Back Bay

RSVP: Devin.Cole.BRA@CityofBoston.gov or onfacebook.

Some questions to bear in mind for the presentation:

How can High Rock continue to find “GOOD” clients, who will actually interview and extend an offer to a qualified candidate as opposed to interview 100’s of candidates before making a decision?

Since High Rock only gets paid on a contingency basis clients only pay when they hire, yet how does High Rock answer questions such as how long will it take to find someone?

How do they choose which Social Media avenues to use in finding candidates?

How does High Rock handle the fact that companies are trying to avoid using recruiters and the ones that do now take 3-6 months to extend an offer as opposed to 3-6 weeks?

How does Jill use her financial services recruiting expertise (8 years in business/4 years of fs recruiting business) when the financial services business has changed and is flat in terms of hiring?
