Remember how Emergent Energy Group, who presented to Boston Young Entrepreneurs this month, was in the running forBusiness Week’s 25 Under 25 competition? Well, yeah, we were pretty excited about that and so were Jayson and Jesse from Emergent.

Turns out there was plenty more excitement in store for us: Emergent has WON the competition!

That’s right, Jayson and Jesse (aka Windfarmer and Gentle Breeze) and their partners Chris and Pat (aka Bro and “Where’s the Money”) are the top entrepreneurs under 25 in the United States.

So, please, offer up your congrats to the lads from Emergent in the comments. They are top class and they made all of us very proud…oh and they also have a pretty excellent company to go with their newfound fame.

October Main Event - Matt Webster and Drink a Better Brew

Posted under Events, News by Devin Cole on Wednesday 14 October 2009 at 12:51 pm

On October 20th, Boston Young Entrepreneurs brings you the October Main Event!

Come see Matt Webster present his business plan for Drink a Better Brew.

Matt will tell us how he built Drink a Better Brew on the idea that craft beer can be viewed in the same light as fine wines, scotches and vodkas. Matt’s educational offerings help those of us who love beer to understand and develop our tastes and the ways that our favorite brews can pair with food. Matt’s company aims to expose restauranteurs, bar owners and liquor store owners to craft beers

We’re also excited to tell you that we’re moving to a new location, at least for this month. Join us as we experience WorkBar for the first time!

WorkBar is co-working and shared office space on the gym membership model. It could be a good solution for many of you working out of your homes.

Internship Panel for Entrepreneurs

Posted under News by Devin Cole on Monday 4 May 2009 at 6:10 am

Boston Young Entrepreneurs hosted our very first panel discussion on April 21st on the subject of interns for startups.

Panos Panay, founder of BYE and Sonicbids, and Tess Cychosz, who manages Sonicbids‘ internship program, provided insight into their experience hiring, managing and even firing interns.

Some tips on finding and managing interns effectively:

1. When you write a job description, make it sound exciting…because it is! Startups are a great environment for a smart, creative student.

2. Hire the best people. Interview as many candidates as possible and hopefully all. Don’t give in to the temptation to hire the first person who walks in the door.

3. Treat interns like full-fledged members of the team.

4. Reward your interns with responsibility, and call out their success and accomplishments in creative ways. You may not be able to pay them, but you can make their internship rewarding and fun.

5. Check-ins are important. Stay in touch with your intern and have them at the office with you as much as possible.

For more words of wisdom, check out Morgan’s presentation:

Launch into Boston Presentation Report

Posted under Business News, News by Devin Cole on Wednesday 8 April 2009 at 12:27 pm

Launch into Boston’s founders Stefanie Smith and Meg Helms presented their business plan at February’s meeting.

In the first of an ongoing Boston Young Entrepreneurs tradition, Stef and Meg have written up their presentation experience. Please take a look and provide comments, suggestions and ideas to your fellow entrepreneurs.

Presenting our company, Launch into Boston, to members of Boston Young Entrepreneurs has been an extremely beneficial experience for us. To speak in front of a group of people about an idea that we have fostered for over a year was intimidating at first, but what we gained from it far outweighed our initial apprehension.

Launch is a transition service that connects people to Boston. We work with colleges, companies and individuals to provide information and resources to our clients so that they can make a successful transition into the city, whether that transition is from college or from another part of the country.  We work with our clients one-on-one, and we host seminars about living and working in Boston.
