Looking for Interns to Help Your Business?

Posted under Resources by Devin Cole on Wednesday 16 December 2009 at 1:49 pm

Lauren Porat from Urban Interns sent along this notice to me about their services and a discount they’re offering. I figured you guys might be able to take advantage of their listing services given how heavily many of you rely on interns to run your companies

Do you need an extra set of hands to help you gear up for a productive fall but don’t want the financial responsibility of a full-time employee? Check out Urban Interns, an online marketplace focused on connecting small business owners with college students and grads looking for part-time work and internships. Post a job, search our database, connect with candidates through our private communication platform.  Named One of America’s Most Promising Startups by BusinessWeek, Urban Interns just launched in Boston and is offering a special $5 discount to Boston Young Entrepreneurs Program members. Use discount code ONEB5. Questions? Email lauren@urbaninterns.com.”

Boston Young Entrepreneurs’ partner WorkBar, which offers office space for a monthly fee on the model of a gym membership, has some exciting news: they’ve moved!

To celebrate, WorkBar is hosting an open house TOMORROW. I’ve heard their space is beautiful, so make sure to take a walk over and see it.

If you can’t make it tomorrow, go experience their new space at 711 Atlantic Avenue on Thursday for free co-working day.

Startup Office Space Open House - 175 McLellan Highway

Posted under Events, Resources by Devin Cole on Monday 7 December 2009 at 10:33 am

As we work on a more permanent solution to housing (officing?) the startup community in Boston, we’ll highlight potential opportunities wherever we can find them.

On that note, the East Boston Chamber of Commerce is co-hosting an open house at 175 McLellan Highway, a property that has opened itself up to startup businesses. If you need space and use the airport, service the North Shore, East Boston or Downtown, or need parking to conduct your business, this may be a great opportunity for you.

Either way, I suggest getting out there and seeing it for yourself.

More info on the East Boston Chamber’s website.

Date: December 17th

Time: 5:30 to 7:30pm

Location: 175 McLellan Highway, East Boston

ACCION Financing Panel Wrapup and Resources

Posted under Business News, Resources by Devin Cole on Monday 30 November 2009 at 2:05 pm

On Thursday, November 19th, Boston Young Entrepreneurs and ACCION USA co-hosted a panel discussion on alternative financing for small businesses.

Andrew Prescott of Urban Adventours and Marty Walsh of Geekhouse Bikes provided their financing histories, and Sherri Lane of ACCION USA chimed in regularly to provide insight into the funder’s point of view.

After the panel, we heard feedback from several attendees that a primer on financing would be helpful. Both Andrew and Marty relied on several different funding streams and the success of their businesses rests on their ability to navigate these streams successfully.

With that in mind, if you have any questions about your options in terms of financing, please take a look at the following ACCION resources:

DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOANS AND LOAN OPTIONS

THE PROS AND CONS OF USING A CREDIT CARD

A BASIC GUIDE TO FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Please ask any questions you have in the comments field and we’ll be sure to answer them!

VentureFizz Can Find You a Startup Job

Posted under Resources by Devin Cole on Monday 23 November 2009 at 12:55 pm

We know some of you in the Boston Young Entrepreneurs community are not, in fact, entrepreneurs, at least not at this very moment. Many of you are students with an idea or just a desire to get into the startup world, and many of you have started a company in your past but have a 9-5 for the time being.

Well, we’re always telling young people about how much you can learn working at a startup. It’s often a much more comprehensive, interesting and challenging experience than a regular job.

So, with that in mind, we’d like to point your attention to VentureFizz’ job board for technology companies. This is a quality job board and I know this because, among many other great companies like RunMyErrand and TripAdvisor, I see that BYE Founder Panos Panay’s company Sonicbids is all over it!

Many of you are probably aware of VentureFizz as a great place to go for all types of news on the tech sector in Boston. I highly recommend VentureFizz and suggest you follow them closely if you’re interested in technology. And in this age of plentiful media, make sure to track them on Twitter @VentureFizz!

So, to recap: VentureFizz is awesome in general and even better because they have a job board just for you. For your future reference, VentureFizz will be in the links section to the right of the page.

Web Innovators Group

Posted under Events, Resources by Devin Cole on Friday 20 November 2009 at 2:22 pm

Venrock’s David Beisel has built a tremendous and powerful organization in the Web Innovators Group, which provides the opportunity for web and mobile startups to exhibit their businesses to a large audience made up of Boston’s entrepreneurial and venture capital community.

WebInno’s quarterly events have become can’t miss in Boston and I’ve found them both incredibly interesting and fertile ground for contacts and networking.

I hereby bestow the Boston Young Entrepreneurs stamp of approval (we’d love the WebInno stamp of approval as well, but that’s neither here nor there!) on WebInno, and recommend that you check out their next event on December 7th.

Their link will be included in the links section on the right side of the page for your reference.
